Adolescents, with the highest rate of self-injurious behaviors compared to other demographic groups (17%) admit to self-injury at least once in their lifetime. Sadly, the average age of the first incident is 13 years old. Whether you are a parent of a child who is engaging in self-injury, a teacher, or medical professional/clinician who is working with such a teen, it can be both terrifying and perplexing. Terrifying because suicide may or may not play role, and perplexing because self-harming is antithetical to our nature as humans to avoid pain at all costs.

Dr. Michael Hollander, an expert in the etiology and treatment of self-injury, will provide insight and understanding, and answer these questions and more. This webinar is geared towards family, friends, and all front-line workers.

Learning Objectives

  1. Participants will understand the importance of distinguishing between NSSI and suicide
  2. Participants will understand the functions of NSSI
  3. Participants will develop the skill set to manage parental worry about NSSI
