Adolescents, with the highest rate of self-injurious behaviors compared to other demographic groups (17%) admit to self-injury at least once in their lifetime. Sadly, the average age of the first incident is 13 years old. Whether you are a parent of a child who is engaging in self-injury, a teacher, or medical professional/clinician who is working with such a teen, it can be both terrifying and perplexing. Terrifying because suicide may or may not play role, and perplexing because self-harming is antithetical to our nature as humans to avoid pain at all costs.
Dr. Michael Hollander, an expert in the etiology and treatment of self-injury, will provide insight and understanding, and answer these questions and more. This webinar is geared towards family, friends, and all front-line workers.
Learning Objectives
- Participants will understand the importance of distinguishing between NSSI and suicide
- Participants will understand the functions of NSSI
- Participants will develop the skill set to manage parental worry about NSSI
