We are thrilled to announce our first Puerto Rican Linehan Board Certified DBT Clinician! Dr. Luis Díaz-Medero, Ph.D. is a Clinical Psychologist licensed in Puerto Rico. He is the owner of a DBT and trauma-focused clinic located in Ponce, Puerto Rico. His work primarily involves treating individuals experiencing emotional dysregulation, trauma-related symptoms, and suicidal or self-harming behaviors. He also serves as a DBT Clinical Supervisor in a Comprehensive DBT Program in Ponce, where he provides supervision to pre-doctoral interns and practicum students.
To him, DBT-LBC™ Certification represents an individual milestone as well as the collective acknowledgement of the high-quality DBT work being done in Puerto Rico. Dr. Díaz-Medero explained the certification process allowed him to validate his competencies, strengthen his clinical precision, and ensure his services met the highest standards of comprehensive DBT. He expressed that many Puerto Rican DBT therapists have remained unnoticed by the international community due to the language barriers, and he was excited for the opportunity to highlight the expertise, commitment, and cultural strengths of the DBT community in Puerto Rico.
He was introduced to DBT in graduate school, where he was immediately drawn to the structured behavioral hierarchy of treatment and the well-balanced dance of acceptance and change. The best advice he was given as a student learning DBT was to focus on growth, which is advice he continues to share with others in his practice today. The best therapists that he knows are genuine, vulnerable, and irreverent, and have done their own healing work so they can help others in a more meaningful way. He highlighted his favorite DBT skill as Alternative Rebellion, as it allows for validating of behavioral function and offers effective ways to urge surf. He is excited to give back to the DBT community as a volunteer for DBT-LBC™.
When he is not helping his patients create a life worth living, Dr. Díaz-Medero enjoys binge-watching television series and movies and spending time with his husband, pets, and friends.
