June is Pride Month, and DBT-LBC™ wants to contribute by sharing two of our recent webinars that feature working with LGBTQ+ clients in DBT treatment. For the entire month of June, these webinars are available for FREE by following the links below and using the password “June2025”.
Video One features the webinar “Tips for Working with LGBTQ+ Clients in Dialectical Behavior Therapy” with Dr. Kim Skerven, Ph.D., ABPP, and Dr. Jake Camp, Ph.D . The presenters explore the ways that affirmative practice is embedded within the DBT model, including connections between DBT’s biosocial theory and minority stress theory. Grounded in the current state of the research literature, ideas on decreasing stigma and increasing affirmation in DBT with LGBTQ+ populations are discussed. The presenters also present special considerations when working with adolescent LGBTQ+ clients in DBT . Follow the link here or use the QR code in the image with password June 2025
Video Two is titled “Working Effectively With LGBTQ+ Clients in Treatment” with Dr. Kim Skerven, PhD, ABPP. An expert in DBT and working with LGBTQ+ clients, Dr. Skerven addresses how to effectively inform our theoretical framework, apply the biosocial theory of emotion dysregulation, and pay attention to the effects of stigmatizing environments for LGBTQ+ people. Dialectical assessment, validation, and change strategies are discussed in the context of helping LGBTQ+ clients recover from the effects of stigma. Importantly, Dr. Skerven proposes ways to effectively maintain fidelity to the model while actively understanding the impact of LGBTQ+ minority stress.
